Don Karwelis

Don came into Ocean Works and wished to do a large project. So, we started by giving him a litho plate that would print a 22” X 30” image. We also sent to his studio an assortment of drawing materials: pencils, crayons, and water—tusche. We asked him to do a test image so he could see the litho results. He came back with a finished drawing which we ended up printing into a 3-color work titled, “Cicada.”

He was pleased with the outcome so we talked about his large project. He wanted to make a 3 panel print, each 41” X 29 1/2”. That makes a very large large triptych which is 41” X 88 1/2”! Our stones weren’t large enough for that, but we had plates like the one he drew “Cicada” on. Each panel would have 3 runs and all the panels used the same colors. Our wall space was just big enough to put all 3 panels up for viewing!
